Afternoon Glow

Spring Meadow by David Montgomery

12 x 9

I was attracted to this scene because of the diversity of tree sizes and varieties separated by distance. It is facinating how certain trees will tell you the avaiability of water and the micro-climates in an area.

The solitary juniper in the middle ground indicates some water below the surface. The tall trees in the back tell us that there is more water, snow melt and such in the rock outcrops where they grow, unseen in this view. These ponderosas are a backdrop to more junipers, growing in a succesive tier.

While all of this was enough to keep me entranced, the late afternoon sun added spectacular drama as I was finishing up the piece.
