David Montgomery oil painting: The Patriarch

32 x 44

The San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado are a distinctive range of volcanic origin. Along the eastern foothills of this range are the eroded remnants of ash flows consisting of an orangeish rock called ryolite. The wind and water erosion has sculpted marvelous formations that rival any in the southwest.

This piece was done in an area ominously called Deadman's Cave Gulch, attesting to the colorful name-giving procedure in the Old West. I was able to locate an undocumented petroglyph panel in a nearby canyon during one of my painting breaks. I have copied this ancient art work into the left foreground of the painting.
